About

My grandmother began showing signs of Parkinson's Disease in 1996. Since then her condition has gotten progressively worse. Once the master of the house — taking care of everyone and everything — she has slowly become incapable of doing anything on her own. This loss of control forced a very strong shift in her relationship between herself, her living environment and our family.

This series of photos looks to document the effects this situation has had on her relationship with her daughter, her husband and herself.

On Parkinsons

From Wikipedia:

Parkinson's disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, resting tremor (characteristically at around 5Hz), a slowing of physical movement (bradykinesia) and, in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement (akinesia). The primary symptoms are the results of decreased stimulation of the motor cortex by the basal ganglia, normally caused by the insufficient formation and action of dopamine, which is produced in the dopaminergic neurons of the brain located in the substantia nigra. Secondary symptoms may include high level cognitive dysfunction (possibly secondary to Lewy body dissemination) and subtle language problems. PD is both chronic and progressive.
