Tokyo, Japan
Art Space Tokyo acts as your 272 page personal guide and interpreter, connecting you with the neighborhoods and figures behind some of the most inspiring art spaces in this colossal city.
Art Space Tokyo is a book I produced with editor Ashley Rawlings from Spring 2007 to Spring 2008. We spent the first quarter of 2008 working to complete the project by April. I acted as project coordinator, art director and designer.
The visual style and rhythm of this book aims to be antithetical to the 'standard' guide format. Instead of glossy pages, coverage of many locations with limited depth and lots of photographs, Art Space Tokyo instead focuses on a small number of spaces, draws the reader close through in-depth interviews and essays, and challenges the imagination with sumie ink illustrations.
We think the end result is something unique and, hopefully, a breath of fresh air to those looking for an alternative and intimate guide to Tokyo.
